Fibroscan

Fibroscan is a non-invasive diagnostic ultrasound based device used to measure liver scaring or fibrosis, caused by different liver diseases. It is done thrice a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday) in the Department of Hepatology, Level II, C Block, Liver Lab, Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Around 80-100 patients get their fibroscan on each day. We have conducted fibroscan on 10,702 patients in 2018 and numbers have increased by more than 100% over last ten years. Patients are instructed to come empty stomach for at least three hours prior to procedure. For the procedure, patient lies on his back with right arm extended behind his/her head with exposure of right upper abdominal area. A Nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant will apply a water-based gel to the skin and then place a non-invasive probe over liver to conduct the procedure. The procedure is completely safe and painless. It is not done in patients with pregnancy and follows the guidelines led by PNDT Act.
